Gravit Designer - Open Source Design Software



Adobe CC has been my go to digital design software for years.   I have been using the Adobe Creative Suite package since I started art school back in 2006.  I remember sitting down in class at a new Apple computer and not knowing how to use the computer let alone the software!  After a few short weeks I was able to navigate the software pretty easily, but it took time to learn.

In the past few years Adobe has converted their software from a one time pay and download model to a monthly subscription based model.  Years ago users could purchase the design software and use it for many years before needing to upgrade.  Now Adobe has forced its users to pay a monthly fee in order to get access to the newest updates, but once you stop paying you lose access to the software.

This is why i have been looking for a replacement.  The current price with a school discount for the Adobe package is $50.  I have been looking for a replacement that I can use at home and work.  Gravit Designer is a close replacement for Adobe Illustrator but it does have some limitations for experienced users.  For the most part it uses many of the same keystroke shortcuts as Illustrator making it easy for users to convert.  They offer an online storage option but it can be clunky at times.  Gravit Design is a great replacement for novice to mid range users of Adobe Illustrator.  It does not have the amount of online tutorials as Adobe does.  I plan on using Gravit Designer as a free replacement for Adobe Illustrator.

Google Hangouts

Google Hangouts is a re-brand of their Google Chat service.  Hangouts feature the much of the same features of Skype without ads to distract our attention.  We use Google Chat at our office because we have had a better experience with Google compared to Skype. Our experience with Google Hangouts has been very positive because of call and video quality with easy file sharing.  "Google Hangouts is super easy – you just need a browser, an add-on, and a Google account, which most people already have and use for a lot more than just Hangouts.
